Reimagining Shibori with Kyoto Spirit
In Kyoto’s Karasuma district, BUNZABURO blends tradition and innovation in striking shibori tie-dye creations. Rooted in Kyoto’s rich textile heritage, the brand transforms this centuries-old craft into sculptural fashion and accessories. In August 2025, its flagship store reopened after a major renewal, marking its 90th anniversary and the company’s 10th, preserving Kyoto’s artistry while embracing a fresh, contemporary vision.
Housed in a beloved Kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto-style townhouse), the building had aged gracefully but required structural renewal after nearly a century. The first floor began retail operations in 2004, but until now, little had changed. Recognizing the cultural value of the machiya itself, the company undertook a thoughtful renovation — aimed not just at restoring, but reimagining the space for the next generation.
The newly reopened first floor continues to showcase the brand’s signature creations: BUNZABURO’s iconic polyester scarves, bags, and garments with their distinctive shibori textures, alongside Katayama Bunzaburo Shoten’s silk apparel and accessories. Meanwhile, the second floor, formerly used as office space, has been transformed into a showroom and salon for the new brand KATAYAMA.
More than just a display area, this second-floor space presents an immersive installation of the company’s shibori archive materials and design references — including early works, historic samples, and texts collected over generations. It will also serve as a venue for new collection launches, artist collaborations, and seasonal exhibitions.
Looking ahead, the store will host art showcases and offer original, limited-edition items starting this autumn. With this renewal, the flagship store is positioned not only as a retail destination but as a cultural hub, inviting both local and international visitors to experience the evolving world of Kyoto’s shibori. True to the brand’s philosophy, the renovated space merges timeless Kyoto tradition with contemporary creative energy, making it a place well worth the journey.
